MY PROFILE
Personal Statement
I am a British Computer Society (BCS) Fellow and a Chartered IT Professional (CITP) and member of the International Institute of Business Analyst (MIIBA). I am taking the Business Analyst community on an exciting AI journey and conversation and within the wider Tech sector.
Having gained my PhD in Computer Science from the University of Sheffield, UK in 1999, my career, spanning over a quarter of a century, has been focused on information and digital technology as a Business Analyst, Project Manager, Technologist and Consultant having successfully delivered business critical and large-scale projects and programmes for Central Government and Commercial Sectors covering policing, national security, telecommunications, defence, transportation, disruptive and emerging technologies.
My recent AI and Generative AI research has been exploring how AI impacts the life of business analysts by taking them on a transformative journey. My interest is to transform business analysis by learning how AI can help streamline business processes, automate tasks, maximise impact in the workplace and empowers business analysts to free up time for taking on higher value work and more strategic roles and inspiring and guiding business analysts to thrive in the AI era and success.
Author of the book: Business Analysis in the Era of Generative AI (published in February 2024)
AI and Generative AI are the opportunities of our lifetimes….. they are bigger than the internet, search engine, cloud computing, mobile communication technologies – combined together. In my book, I advise Business Analysts and Consultants to pivot their role from competing against AI or even resisting it to harnessing its power. Refocusing on delivering higher-value work and fluency in AI will be key !With the Generative AI’s ability to produce software code directly from natural language requirements, several traditional business analysis artefacts and models become less on demand. Generative AI and LLM can produce outputs to support business analysis works such as functional and non-functional requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, software modelling, documentation. Copilot can perform administrative tasks to support business analysis work. With the current trend and direction this technology is heading to, there will just be more and more Business Analysis tasks performed by AI. This frees up Business Analysts to focus on delivering more strategic value and allows Business Analysts to become true strategic advisors rather than intermediate artifacts producers. I have proposed seven steps of upskilling for Business Analysts to transition to Business Advisor:
1. Improving efficiency in operations and processes
2. Driving cost savings through innovative solutions.
3. Reducing business and technology risks
4. Adopting and promoting an agile mindset
5. Embracing and advocating for automation
6. Leading with data-driven decision-making
7. Promoting sustainability in business practices.
Three Key Takeaways from my book:
1. Develop AI literacy to distinguish quality AI output from misinformation. Check sources, biases, inconsistencies
2. Master prompt engineering to get higher quality AI outputs. Very important skills for Business Analysts / Advisors.
3. Cultivate soft skills (creativity, communication, emotional intelligence, thought leaders.
