Sunday 8th January 2017

@9am

On the 8th day of 2017 while the New Year’s resolutions are still fresh, John and I and my sister Fidelia were back to our eternal favourite – the Regent’s Park 10K Winter Series. It was #4 of 6.

It was a lot warmer than the previous Sunday when we did the Hyde Park Serpentine New Year’s Day 10K – around 12’C, with light drizzle. It was an excellent turnout. I guess those new year’s resolutions have not faded out yet !!

As for me, I was hoping to break or at least match my time the previous Sunday. Unfortunately, I only managed 56’32”. Since I am now deep into my long weekend runs as I am scaling up for the marathon season in spring (my upcoming Milton Keynes marathon will take place on 1st May), I actually find it actually harder to sprint for 10K distance. I guess my long run has given me stamina but on the other hand it has taken away my power and speed (or should I blame the old age???).

John managed to cut down nearly a minute from the previous Sunday and finished in 1:06’02”. John felt surprisingly pleased as he had not been able to do any training during the week due to his mum was at the hospital and John was at her bedside till 2am in the morning then heading to work after only a couple of hours of sleep. I am so pleased John’s mum is back to the nursing home now.

My sister Fidelia finished in 1:03’45” with a sling on her right shoulder throughout the 10K. In October last year when she was running the Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon race, she was pushed to the floor by another runner and suffered from a dislocated shoulder. She had not done any running for nearly 3 months and this was her first running race since her shoulder injury. Now that she has gained back her confidence, she is going to slowly inch back to running. She found it so frustrating not to be able to exercise.

Since the company The Race Organiser took over from the Nice Work, this event is much better organised. There are a lot more marshals directing the runners, giving out water at the stations and looking after runners’ bags. Many thanks to the Marshals.

Our next event is the Fred Hughes 10 miler in a fortnight time !
